You Can be More Productive When Your Organize Your Home Office
Do you run a small business from your home and always feel as if you don't get everything done that needs to be done? Try these tips to help keep you organized and spend more time being productive every day.
Try to take care of things as they cross your desk. Go through the mail, toss the junk mail, and try to address the important stuff as you see it. Pay that bill, answer that letter, and then get it off your desk. Don't accumulate piles of paper on your desk-this clutters your mind and prevents you from thinking clearly and making good decisions.
Figure out what kind of organizing systems you want for your office, whether it be filing cabinets, baskets or vertical files that will keep your paperwork in order.
Before you close up shop at night, spend a few minutes doing your office 'housework'. Straighten up your desk, empty the trash, shred that pile of documents that contain sensitive information, and fill the paper in your copier and printer.
Your last task at night should be to create your To-Do list for the next day. This will allow you to jump right in the next morning, and you won't spend the first minutes of the day on brain overload as you contemplate all that you need to do.
Close the 'office' door at night when you leave. This symbolizes the end of the work day and the beginning of your family time, just as if you were leaving an office and driving home.
Once you lock up shop at night, don't go back in the office if you remember something. Instead, have a small pocket-sized notebook to jot down those ideas and things to do as they pop into your head throughout the evening.
Clean your office once a week. Dusting off your desk and running the vacuum shows that you truly care about your work space, and makes it a pleasant and healthy place to spend so many hours of your time.
You need to be CEO, CFO, executive assistant (to yourself) and sanitation engineer. When you take the time to clean and maintain your workspace you will notice you are more productive, creative and profitable.
